Ceftriaxone is a broad-spectrum semi-synthetic third-generation cephalosporin with a potent bactericidal activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Ceftriaxone injection is used for the treatment of urinary tract infection, abdominal infections, skin infection, respiratory tract infections, meningitis and Lyme diseases.

Ceftriaxone works by inhibiting the mucopeptide synthesis in the bacterial cell wall. The beta-lactam moiety of ceftriaxone binds to carboxypeptidases, endopeptidases, and transpeptidases in the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane which involved in cell-wall synthesis and cell division. Due to this formation, enzyme to lose its activity and therefore the bacteria produce defective cell walls, causing cell death.
